Jill Lee is the owner of CustomDogJackets, located in Maryland, USA. Her motto is “We Fit Hard to Fit Dogs” and she specializes in custom attire for dogs of all shapes and sizes, especially hard to fit breeds like corgis, dachshunds, and more. Each piece is handmade with love, customized to your own pup’s measurements.
In February 2017, I attended the Super Pet Expo in Edison, New Jersey with two goals: pet lots of puppies and support local businesses. Goal #1 was achieved easily… I pet a lot of pups and even met up with some corgi friends! As for goal #2, I took a peek at the vendor list and saw a booth called CustomDogJackets (owned by Jill Lee) and was immediately intrigued. Corgis are notoriously difficult to find clothes for, so I knew I had to stop by and take a peek.
Jill’s booth was easy to spot; it was covered in adorable doggie fashions… she had mountains and racks full of of handmade dog coats, harnesses, leashes, and jackets in tons of various styles and fabrics. I had just launched our CorgiThings fabrics via Spoonflower that weekend, and I knew I wanted to work with her on a custom piece. After a few months, we reconnected and got Lucy’s custom harness made using our Corgi Peaches fabric. I am super excited to share the outcome of our custom harness and could not be happier with the final product.
I sent Jill the measurements for Lucy’s neck, chest, length, and weight. For reference, Lucy’s measurements are (I hope Queen Lucy doesn’t mind me sharing her measurements, heehee!):
Neck: 16-17″
Chest: 22-23″
Length: 16″
Weight: 24 lbs
I sent about 1 yard of our selected fabric from Spoonflower directly to Jill. We used this larger version of our Corgi Peaches pattern in KONA Cotton. You can find it here: https://www.spoonflower.com/fabric/6376235-larger-size-corgi-peach-sploot-by-corgithings. Jill was kind enough to snap some progress photos of her production process! She also picked the PAWFECT pink color to match the pattern we sent her… This color combo is seriously a match made in corgi heaven!
Because Lucy is reactive toward dogs during walks, she sometimes slips out of her collars and harnesses. I expressed my concerns to Jill; she was super understanding and told me that her harnesses are tough and reinforced… and I can attest that they definitely are! The harness has very strong velcro on the chest and belly bands PLUS adjustable clips for extra reinforcement. Jill also uses canvas backing to add sturdiness. Now I don’t have to worry about Lucy “falling out” of her harness during one of her reactive episodes. The harness is also easy to put on and take off, which is another plus in my book.
See below for some more detailed photos.
Overall I am SUPER thrilled with how Lucy’s harness turned out. We got a lot of smiles and giggles from strangers during our photoshoot because Lucy looks absolutely adorable in it! As for comfort (which is just as important as being cute), some of Lucy’s other harnesses are tight under her arms and can cause chafing, but we don’t have any issues with this one. It is very comfortable. Lucy can move around very well, and we kept joking that she was strutting around like she was on a secret corgi mission. 🙂 Thank you again, Jill!
